Chapter 21

Mac shuffled down the hall to the rocker by her living room window. A groan escaped her lips as she lowered herself onto the cushioned seat. Every part of her body hurt—even her eyelids.

“This will make you feel better.” Miss Freebody handed her a mug of steaming liquid. “Your tea collection is limited, but I found a bag of chamomile, which is good for inflammation.”

“Thank you.” Mac managed a smile. She’d prefer a cup of black coffee, but she wasn’t about to complain. As Mama said, that would be “rude, crude, ill-bred, and socially unacceptable.” She took a sip. Hmm. Not bad.

She gazed outside and lowered her mug. Had Jake been there all night? She dug her cell phone out of her robe pocket.

“What’s up?”

“Come in and have breakfast. We need to talk.”

Jake climbed out of his squad car and stretched. She’d been so angry with him, but after her accident, when she heard his voice at her window … She drank some more tea.

A knock at the door. Mac looked down at her terrycloth robe covering her flannel pajamas. And her hair—her fingers worked through tangles and attempted to comb her mane into place.

Miss Freebody hustled to the front door and peered through the peephole. “Detective, come in.”

“Morning, Miss P.” He glanced at Mac. “And thanks for inviting me for breakfast.”

“Of course.” Miss Freebody raised an eyebrow in Mac’s direction. “It will be ready soon. Why don’t you have a seat while Mackenzie gets dressed?”

Taking the hint, Mac rose. Jake was watching, so there could be no shuffling now. She prepared for a struggle to make her gait natural, but there was no need. The pain had subsided—for the most part. Maybe the tea helped after all.

After easing into sweats and brushing her hair, Mac returned to find the other two seated at the table and a steaming plate of eggs and bacon ready for her.

“Delicious.” Jake took a sip of orange juice. “As good as Cowan’s.”

A blush blossomed on Miss Freebody’s narrow face and neck. “I doubt that, but you always were a sweet young man, Jake Sanders.”

“How are you feeling, Mac?” Jake gave her a look that made her pulse quicken. Was this the look he gave all his girlfriends?

“Better.” She tore her gaze from his. “Some bruising.” She touched her chest. “Miss P gave me some tea that helped with the aches and pains.” She slipped him a quick smile. “Thanks for being there for me. At the crash. I appreciate it.”

“My pleasure.”

The warmth in his voice washed over her, and she turned to him once more. “Sam told me the Chief was at the hospital last night. What did he want?”

“He ordered me to solve the murder of Eleanor Davis and find out who’s been coming after you.”

“I wish he’d done that sooner.”

“No sense going there.” Jake swallowed. “Do any of your neighbors own black trucks?”

“Why?”

He sighed. “Mac, please, just answer the question.”

“Fine. I don’t remember seeing any around.” She caught his gaze. “Why?”

“Last night, as I pulled up, a black pickup took off from down there.
